this week's class.
April 12, 2007.
--ASSIGNMENTS due April 19 have
been posted. The deadlines for assignments due April 8 and April 12 have passed.
When we work to a deadline,
there's a point beyond which the effort to complete a task becomes worthless. We've
reached that point. The original "deadline," by the way, existed around
the Andersonville prisoner of war camp during the Civil War. It was a white line drawn
around the camp; if any prisoner crossed the line he was shot dead.
--MINUTES for class on April
5 have been posted.
--EXAMS. On Sunday night/Monday morning I'll begin posting information about the
final exam. At the same time, I'll post a brief preview of next Thursday's class.
April 8, 2007.
--ASSIGNMENTS. By
tonight's deadline, I received evaluation memos from Pat, Carla, Kelley, Kerry, Beth,
Michael, and Pam. I'll compile your comments over the next few days and forward them to
Dr. Zhu and his teammates, who I'm sure will appreciate your thoughtful observations and
suggestions. I'll return (marked) copies of your memos when we next meet as a class
on April 19.
--MINUTES. I've received from Carla and Beth the minutes for class on April 5, and I
should have the minutes posted here by Monday evening.
--CONFERENCES. A reminder that this week's conference schedule is included in the
postscript to the April 5th class at NOTES.
April 5, 2007.
--NOTES. Please read the postscript
to this evening's class at NOTES.
A preview of our class on April 19 will be posted by the end of next week.
--ASSIGNMENTS and FINAL EXAM.
Assignments due by April 19 and guidelines for the final will be posted by the end
of next week. Don't forget the assignment due on April 8.
--CONFERENCES. Next week's conference schedule is in the postscript to this evening's

--TOPIC PROPOSAL
MEMOS. This Sunday I'll be sending
you brief emails as follow-ups to my comments this evening about your topic proposals.
If I let you know that your initial topic proposal was unclear, unfocused,
incomplete, or otherwise unacceptable, you should send me a revised topic proposal memo as
soon as possible.

--ASSIGNMENTS
due March 29 have been posted.
--NOTES. Postscript to this evening's class and a brief preview of our next class
will be posted on Sunday evening, March 25.
--BOX OF BOOKS. No time this evening:
I'll bring the books to class next week.
March 16, 2007.
--MINUTES for class on March
8 have been posted.
--ASSIGNMENTS.
Because of some rescheduling, I've made a minor change to the ASSIGNMENTS (regarding preparing
for presentations) due on March 22: please check out the resources pertaining to
grant writing. (The online articles concerning agendas and effective meetings will
be due on March 29 instead of March 22.)
--NOTES.
Please read the preview of next week's class (March 22).
--TOPICS. I'll be back online and checking email this Sunday evening:
let me know if you're having any problems working up topic ideas for your final project.
March 12/13, 2007.

to the schedules for both our MINUTES and PRESENTATIONS. Please check the updated schedules. (Thank you very
much, Michael, for helping out.)

readings on grant writing.
--NOTES. I apologize for the slight delay, but the postscript to class on March 8
and a brief preview of our class on March 22 will be posted on Monday evening, March 12
(not on Sunday evening, as usual).
--REMINDER REGARDING EMAIL. As noted previously, I read and reply to class emails on Sunday through
Thursday nights only. (Friday and Saturday are my wild nights off.)
March 9, 2007.
--ASSIGNMENTS
due March 22 have been posted. (If you wish to get ahead on your readings during the break,
our assignments for March 29 will include Chapters 18, 19, and 20 on research strategies
and sources; assignments for April 5 will include Chapter 20 on documenting sources.)
--MINUTES: the schedule of Keepers of the Minutes for the remainder of
the term has been posted.
--FINAL PROJECT
(Report/Proposal): Guidelines have
been posted and linked to the PROJECTS
page. (This is a first draft of the guidelines, which I'll be editing on Sunday evening:
if you catch any blunders or broken links in the meantime, please send me an e-mail--and
shout, "Ha ha!")
--NOTES. Postscript to yesterday's class and a brief preview of our next class will

--FINAL PROJECT ABSTRACTS (2005).
To get you thinking about topic ideas
for your own final projects, I've reposted
the (unedited) abstracts to the final reports/proposals that were submitted by the
students enrolled in the spring 2005 section of ENGL 7100. We'll discuss these
briefly on Thursday evening.
--ASSIGNMENTS, NOTES, & FINAL PROJECT GUIDELINES. I'll be updating/adding these pages over the weekend.
In the meantime, as a short follow-up to this evening's presentations on editing and
proofreading, here's a piece on revising,
editing, and compulsive rewriting.
March 5, 2007.
--NOTES. Please read the preview
of this week's class (March 8).

postscript to this past Thursday's class at NOTES. The preview of next week's
class will be posted on Sunday evening, March 4.
March 1, 2007.
--ASSIGNMENTS due March 8 have
been posted. By the way, just so that there are no unpleasant surprises at the end of
term, all assignments that appear on the ASSIGNMENTS page are due on the
assigned dates and in the assigned formats. Though, as a superficial courtesy, I accept
late, incomplete, and bungled work, in truth I match your indifference to it with my own.
Of course, if you're ever confused by an assignment or need help with a project,
simply send me an e-mail--before the day that the work is due.
--NOTES. Over this weekend
I'll add a postscript to this evening's class and a brief preview of next week's class.

of Savannah web page.
--MALPS SUMMER AND FALL 2007 CLASS SCHEDULES: I have a draft version ready of the upcoming class

Winterhalter will be adding soon). If you would like to see the schedule (keeping in
mind that it's still just a draft), please send me an e-mail, and I'll post it to you as
an attachment.

--ASSIGNMENTS due February 1
have been posted. (And now that our class has diverged from the section I taught two
years ago, I've finally made it into 2007--and corrected the dates on the ASSIGNMENTS page. I
apologize for the error. On a similar note, I've just about finished cleaning up the
coding errors on this updated course site, but troubles may show up in your browser that
don't appear in mine: if any page gives you a problem--text too small or too large,
columns out of alignment, anything that makes reading difficult--please let me know.
Thanks.)
--MALPS OPEN HOUSE: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, January 31. See invitation below.
January 24, 2007.
--NOTES. Please visit NOTES to read the brief preview to our
class on January 25.
--ASSIGNMENTS due February 1
will be posted on Thursday evening (Jan. 25), shortly after we get out of class. The fact
that some of you haven't submitted reports has caused a few scheduling delays. Also,
please see news item for Jan. 21 regarding the attendance roster.
--MALPS OPEN HOUSE: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, January 31. MALPS faculty
members and recent graduates from the MALPS program will be on hand in Solms 207 and 209
next Wednesday evening to meet with prospective students and try to answer their questions
about the program. You, too, are invited. Please stop by if you're in the
neighborhood--even if it's just for a few minutes before or after class.
Refreshments will be served.
January 21, 2007.
--ASSIGNMENTS due January 25 have
been posted.
--ATTENDANCE
ROSTER. I have to submit the attendance roster
for our class no later than Monday, January 22. Currently, these students are on the
roster: Kerry, Michael, Beth, Alledria, Pam, Pat, Kelley, and Karla. If you intend to drop
or add the course, please notify both me and the registrar on Monday--no later. The
course e-mail address remains engl7100@yahoo.com. Thank you.
January 19, 2007.
--ASSIGNMENT #2 (report due
January 18). I've received reports from Alledria, Kerry, Kelley, Karla, Beth, Louis,
Pat, and Pam. This web site (with next Thursday's reading assignments) will next be

January 17, 2007
--E-MAIL ASSIGNMENT (due January 14).
To date, Beth, Pat, Kerry, Louis, Kelley,
Karla, and Alledria have all sent e-mails to engl7100@yahoo.com,
and so are in the class address book. (We'll get our forum straightened out by next
week.) If those who have not yet e-mailed me intend to drop the class, please do so
as soon as possible.
--ASSIGNMENTS due January 18.
I have already received reports from Alledria and Kerry. Because I will be at
a conference in Kennesaw on Thursday and Friday, I may not be able to acknowledge receipt
of your e-mail (with Word attachment) immediately, but I will certainly reply by this
Saturday.
--ASSIGNMENTS due January 25.
Because next week's assignments will be based, in part, on information gleaned from
the reports due on January 18, I won't be able to post our next assignments until this
weekend. (In any case, there will be readings but no major projects due.)
Please check back on Saturday evening.
January 14, 2007
--E-MAIL ASSIGNMENT (due by January 14). Beth, Pat, Kerry, Louis,
and Kelley (all of whom sent e-mails to engl7100@yahoo.com

quick note.) Our next assignment is due (via e-mail) this Thursday.
--NOTES. Please read the
postscript to our class on January 11.
January 11, 2007 (after class)
--CORRECTION.
Over the weekend I'll add a postscript
to this evening's class (keep an eye on the NOTES page), but before I forget, please make
this correction to the last handout of the night, "Leading with Electronic
Communications: E-Mail." On page 2 (by the heading "E-mail TIPS") and
again on page 3 (under "Critique"), please change the reference "page 120
in BCM" to "pages 53-56 in World of Work."
Thanks--and more soon.
