In response to the ASSIGNMENT for 11 Feb. 2004, the sites below were posted on time to the course BULLETIN BOARD (earliest submissions at the bottom, most recent at the top).

Inevitably, with so many career-related sites available to us, there's a great deal of overlap regarding such topics as preparing for the interview, handling difficult questions, preparing questions for the interviewers, and so on. If your time is limited, start at the bottom of the list and move up, making sure that you (a) have checked out your own sites thoroughly, and (b) have at least skimmed the sites preceded by a red asterisk (*). (Sites that are not hyperlinked were inaccessible when I last updated this page: try copying the URL into your browser.)

This one "Interview Quick Tips" (content.monster.com/jobinfo/interview) guides you through the whole interviewing process from the beginning to the end. Another one is "The Best Job interview Strategies" (www.best-interview-strategies.com) This one also gives you many good tips and provides many links with helpful information such as how to answer certain questions. The third website "Types of Job Interviews" (www.collegerecruiter.com/pages/articles/article49.htm)tells you about aspects of interviewing and types of interviewing. Also provides more helpful links on resumes and such.

"A Guide to Selecting the Most Appropriate People"(http://accel-team.com/job_interviews/)Hosted by Accel-Team.com, this site provides a list of questions that could be asked during an interview. Although their use is not guaranteed, going over these questions and having some possible answers would be a big help.

"Successful Job Interviews"(http://engineers-international.com/careersinterview.html) Hosted by Engineers International, this website gives a guide to handling interviews with focus on three areas: Preparing for job interviews, Interviewing Methods, and Handling Interview Questions.

* "The Real Truth About Resumes and Job Interviews- by Gerard Mcloughlin." (http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/McLoughlin2.html)This site gives hints on business ettiquite from beginning the search to after you have landed the job. Topics range from "The Secrets of Interview Sucess" to "How to Talk your Boss into Giving you a Payraise". Could be helpful for beginners or for someone who has experience but has recently been laid off.

This site is a well established company directly related to the job search process and I was able to find everything I needed on one page. I didn’t need to search for information for very long.

I’m sure everyone has heard of this site by now; that is why I put it here. As well, the titles are relevant to the material I find ambiguous (so the answers are the one’s that I need) and the tips are short and to the point. I really liked this site. It had a very simple layout and the headings were descriptive. I also liked how they divided the page into two main areas of Resumes and Interviews.

* "Behavioral Interviews" (http://www.wetfeet.com/asp/article.asp?aid=481&atype=Interviewing) by WetFeet.com. The WetFeet.com site has a great number of articles about interviewing in general. The above link will take you to an article that is particularly useful in understanding behavioral interviews--what to expect and how to handle them.

"Discrimination in the Interview?" (http://www.eeoc.gov) by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). According to the EEOC's Uniform Guidelines, all selection devices--including the job interview--must be job-related and must not discriminate unfairly. The above site is useful in finding information on EEO laws, types of discrimination, procedures in filing a charge, and related topics.

* "Rating Scales in the Interview" (http://www.hrtoolkit.gov.bc.ca/staffing/staffing_steps/assess_methods/Rating/Estab_Rating.htm) by British Columbia Public Service Agency. In order to keep the interview assessment reliable across different canidates, many companies use rating scales in the interview. The above link will take you to a page that describes the types of rating scales that employers may use, and understaning each type should be useful to interviewers and, perhaps, interviewees.

2) "handling job interviews/interview technique skills-Bradley" (www.bradleycvs.uk/index.htm). This site provides question to ask the interviewer. Free job interview advice is offered at this site.

* 3) "Job Interview FQA" (www.faqfarm.com/job/interview). This site answers frequently asked questions by individuals chosen for interview. This site gives you examples of the right as well as wrong answers.

Georgia Department of Labor (http://www.dol.state.ga.us/em/employment_laws_rules.htm) I think every applicant should be aware of the state laws governing the working force. This site gives many of those laws.

"Search Cansultants" website seemed to be good for a checklist. It would be good to have for the day of theinterview so that you can make sure you have everything ready to grab. I wouldn�€™t recommend using this site forextensive work.

"Informational Interviewing" (http://danenet.wicip.org/jets/jet-9407-p.html), this site helps you understand what the purpose of an informational interview is and why they are needed. This site also list a "Top 20 Questions" to ask. [Not a job interview site: "informational interviewing" will be important to us in the second half of the term as we work on research methods for the final project.]

"Job Interview Tips" (http://www.bls.gov/oco/oco20045.htm), this site gave great information about how to prepare, dress, conduct, and what sort of information that should be brought to an interview.

* "Employment Interviewing" (http://www.ctdol.state.ct.us/progsupt/jobsrvce/intervie.htm), this site had lots of great information about, "Types of Interviews", "Interviewing Strategies", "Illegal Questions", "Who gets Hired?", and "Negotiating Your Compensation Package".

This site is hosted by our great friend Monster.com! It includes many sections from "Look Better, Feel Better" to "The World's Toughest Job Interview Questions". My favorite section is "Sell Yourself" which helps to give you the mentally to convince the interviewer that you are better than others.

This site, hosted by Career Builder and AOL Find A Job, is very helpful because it lists questions that the employer might be thinking while interviewing you and questions that you should ask the interviewer. It also gives tips on what to do the day before to make sure you are prepared.

This site is an excellent source for job interview tips because it lists many possible questions that an interviewer might ask you other than the usual, "Why do you want this job?" or "Why should I hire you?" The are questions listed for you to ask the interviewer are more thorough and are topics that you might not think to ask about but might need to.

Quintessential Careers.com (http://www.quintcareers.com/interviewing-dos-donts.html) has a list of interview do’s and don’ts that has links to other helpful sites about thank you letters, salary tips and collections of interview questions.

* Job Interview.net (http://www.job-interview.net/interviewbyjob.htm#Human%20Resources) has some industry specific interview questions that are helpful when you are trying to zero in on a specific field.

Baker Library at the Harvard Business School (http://www.library.hbs.edu/career/prepare.html) has links to several other helpful sites, one of which allows you to take a personality test (for free) and get a brief overview of your personality. It also gives you some interview questions that might trip you up based on your personality type.

* "Behavior Based Interviewing" (http://staffingworld.com/intervie.htm) gives an explanation of behavior based interviewing, which is based on the idea that past performances are the best predictor of future performances. Includes tips for the interviewer, sample behavior based questions, and tips for answering the questions.

* "Career Center" (http://www.collegeview.com/career/interviewing/) gives interview do's and don'ts, tips for interview preparation, what to do after an interview, how to make a good first impression, and how to interview well. Also includes the most frequently asked questions and some things you should ask the interviewer.

"How to Dress for Your Interview" (http://career.boisestate.edu/InterviewDress.html), hosted by Boise State University, gives tips on the appropriate way to dress for an interview. It has sections for both men and women. It gives tips on types of clothing that should be worn, including things such as colors, patterns, and fabrics. It also discusses the appropriate shoes, hair, jewelry, perfume and cologne, nails, and makeup. These are all an important part of your first impression on a prospective employer.

"Interviewing" (http://www.careerbuilder.com/JobSeeker/CareerBytes/Archives.htm), provides an extensive article on determining your personality style so that you can comfortably answer when an interviewer says, "Tell me about yourself." There's also an article, "How to Avoid Working for a Toxic Manager," and a humorous section entitled "Interview Blunders."

* "So You Wanna Ace a Job Interview?" (http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/aceinterview/aceinterview5.html) is a great,informally written site loaded with good practical advice, like carrying a well-stocked interview case (extra resumes,lists of references, mints, notepad and pens). Another great tip: ask the interviewer, "Why did you join the company?"

"Nailing the Interview" (http://abcnews.go.com/sections/community/GoodMorningAmerica/chat), is the transcript of a chat room conversation featuring Deidre Dale, an expert in career placement, and ABCNEWS.com readers. This site is especially helpful for recent college graduates.

* "Interviewing Success"(http://www.collegegrad.com/intv/)provides information for "Mastering the Interview", lists specific "Candidate Interview Questions" for different interviewers, and has other helpful information such as "Competitive Interview Preparation" and "After the Interview" follow up suggestions.

"Employment Resources Center" (http://www.ausable.ca/erc.html), hosted by the Ausable Community Center in Ontario, contains excellent resume and interview tips and features an email link which allows further contact for specific questions. All services are free.

"Closing the Interview and Landing the Job" (http://www.resume-resource.com/article13.html) This is just a one page article within a site, but it provides a strong argument for interview follow up with a step-by-step plan.

WEB SITES on JOB INTERVIEWS. No later than 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, send me via the class BULLETIN BOARD or (only if you have any problem accessing the board) e-mail, the following information:
(1) The names and URLs (i.e., web site addresses) of any THREE web sites that you think provide useful information regarding any aspect of the job-interviewing process (such as, preparing for an interview, behaving during the interview, conducting an interview).
(2) For each site you identify, in a sentence or two explain what you find particularly useful about the site.
POST YOUR SITES to the Board by (a) clicking on BULLETIN BOARD; (b) scrolling to the bottom of the page; (c) typing in the information required at "Post a New Message"; and (d) clicking on "send."
TIPS: Rely on a search engine such as Google or alltheweb to locate sites (many of them are out there). Limit yourself to free sites (or at least to those that provide useful information about the interviewing process before asking for credit card numbers). Don't necessarily grab the first three sites that come up on your search: try to find sites that are genuinely helpful to you. On February 13, I'll post the results to our RESOURCES page.

EXAMPLE

* "Preparing for Job Interviews" (http://www.ouc.bc.ca/coop/resources/interviews.htm), hosted by Okanagan University College in Canada, actually helps you to rehearse for interviews by providing clearly organized lists of questions to "ask yourself" before the interview as well as "sample interview questions" and a detailed checklist to help with "pre-interview planning." The "Job Hunting Tips" that accompany the site are also extensive and helpful.
