27 August 2008
--Writing Project #1: Personal Essay. The basic guidelines for our first project appear at Essay
Assignment: Personal Experience. See, in particular, the "topic suggestions"
toward the end of the page: coming up with a good topic idea is the first step. Please
check back here Thursday night (August 28) for a few more details regarding length and
deadlines. On Thursday I'll also be posting reading assignments in our texts (in addition
to the essays I handed out Monday) that should help to get you thinking. Stay tuned!
25 August 2008
--NOTES. Please read the postscript to this
evening's class, posted at NOTES.
Remember: September 1 is Labor Day, so our next class meeting will be on September 8. I'll
post a brief preview of that class early next week.
--READING ASSIGNMENTS and WRITING PROJECT (all related to
Project #1, a personal essay) will be posted by Wednesday evening (Aug. 27).
--EMAIL. I'll next be checking class email

I've corrected the date for fall break on the syllabus: Oct. 13, not Oct. 11.
24 August 2008

--EMAIL ASSIGNMENT. Since yesterday I've

promptly!
--READINGS.
When I posted the reading
assignments yesterday, I forgot to include the
most important one: by Monday's class, please read the course syllabus and let me know if you
have any questions.
--TEXTBOOKS. If you're still waiting for
your textbooks to arrive, please get in touch with one of your class buddies (i.e., the
people you exchanged phone numbers with on Monday evening) to see if you can borrow their
books and/or make photocopies of the assigned readings before we meet on August 25.
19 August 2008
-READINGS. Reading assignments due on August 25

preview of next Monday's class.
18/19 August 2008 (updated)
