FINAL DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
By next Tuesday evening (Aug. 7), please e-mail
me a few pages of informal (yet
thoughtful)
reflections on the works read this term and on
yourself as a prospective teacher of these
works. Here are a few topics to consider--but don't
restrict yourself to these topics:
(1) Looking back on the novels and short stories
read this term, comment on any particular reading
pleasures and reading disappointments you
experienced. Comment as a reader (not as a student
or as a prospective teacher) for this one.
(2) Imagine that you are teaching a senior class
of high school English students--let's say it's
an Advanced Placement class with some sharp,
motivated students. Which of the works studied
this term might you include on your syllabus
--and why? Which works might you almost
certainly not include--and why?
(3) Debates continue to rage between those
educators who insist on the value of teaching
contemporary works of literature representative
of diverse cultures and those who dismiss such
attitudes as excessive "political correctness,"
arguing instead that students should
be reading the "classics." In light of your own
educational experiences as well as your particular
readings this summer, offer your own perspectives
on this debate.
