Admission Standards &
Standards of Progression and Graduation

Because the professional experiences of MALPS students serve as integral aspects of most MALPS courses, applicants to the program should have a significant record of successful full-time work experience.   In addition, because MALPS courses are inherently collaborative and intellectually challenging, applicants should have a strong academic background, well-developed communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning.

In short, the typical MALPS student is a mature, articulate, and intellectually curious individual with several years of significant professional experience.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to make an appointment to meet with the appropriate MALPS track coordinator before submitting application materials.

Please note that students enrolled in other graduate-level degree programs may apply to the MALPS program but that they cannot be admitted to MALPS courses until they have completed (or transferred out of) other degree programs.

Finally, note that all application materials should be submitted directly to AASU's School of Graduate Studies, not to the Office of Liberal Studies or to the office of the track coordinator.

Admission standards for all tracks of the MALPS program appear below.

ADMISSION STANDARDS

A. Regular Admission

For regular admission the applicant must have:

1.  completed requirements for the baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution;

2.  achieved a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 on all undergraduate work;

3.  scored no less than 450 on the verbal and quantitative sections and a 3.5 on the analytical section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE);

4.  provided three letters of professional/academic recommendation;

5.  provided a letter of intent (one to two pages in length) that identifies the following:

  • your ultimate intellectual and career goals, and the ways in which you expect the MALPS program to advance them;
  • your reasons and qualifications for selecting the particular MALPS track (GWST, International, or Leadership) that you have chosen;
  • personal, academic, and professional accomplishments that demonstrate your ability to master new challenges;
  • gaps in your existing knowledge or experience that affect your job satisfaction or success, and that you believe will be addressed by the MALPS program.

Please note that this statement is an opportunity to demonstrate your written communication skills as well as your interest in MALPS, and will be judged accordingly.

B.  Provisional Admission

Provisional admission is not guaranteed but will be considered under the following conditions.

For provisional admission the applicant must have:

1.  completed requirements for the baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution;

2.  a 2.2 overall grade point average or higher on all undergraduate work;

Provisionally admitted students may be reclassified with regular admission status providing they have taken three AASU courses, approved by their advisor,  each with a grade of no less than B.  Additional courses may be required to be completed prior to a student's reclassification.  No more than nine hours may be earned.
