Information for
Transfer Students
Welcome to the General Studies Program at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Well
over half of the students enrolled in the Associate of Arts (AA) and Bachelor of General Studies (BGS)
degree programs at Armstrong began their academic careers (sometimes many years ago) at
other colleges or universities. Because no two colleges are exactly alike, transfer
students often arrive with many questions. This page (along with the rest of the
General Studies web site) attempts to make your transition a bit easier by anticipating
some of those questions. And, of course, we expect that your visit to our web site
will be followed by a visit to our offices in Victor Hall. Once your
transcripts have been evaluated by the Admissions Office,
we can provide more specific answers to your questions. Simply call (912) 921 5991
to schedule an appointment.

AASU Transfer Student Information.
This page,
prepared by Armstrong's Office of Admissions,
provides basic information about the evaluation of transfer credits, the English placement
interview (needed to receive credit for core composition classes taken elsewhere),
the transfer of CLEP credit, physical education requirements, and University System
graduation requirements (including the Regents' Test and the Georgia state government
requirement). If you have questions about any of the information on this page,
please contact the Office
of Admissions or an advisor in the Office of General Studies.

Academic Renewal.
Students who enroll at Armstrong Atlantic State University after an
absence from college of at least six years may be eligible for Academic Renewal--a policy whereby
academic credit for previously completed course work is retained only for courses in which
a grade of at least C or S was earned. Retained grades are not calculated in the
Academic Renewal GPA. Once approved, The Academic Renewal GPA will be used to
determine academic standing and eligibility for graduation. The Academic Renewal GPA will
not be used to determine honors at graduation. It can not be used to determine
eligibility for scholarships, financial aid, or V.A. benefits. To be considered for
Academic Renewal, call Dr. Deanna Cross at (912) 961-3163 in the Office of Adult Academic Services to schedule
an appointment.

Adult Academic Services. Most General Studies
students are "nontraditional"--in the sense that they are managing jobs and
families as well as university course work. If you fall into this large group, be
sure to pay a visit to Dr. Deanna
Cross, the Director of Adult Academic
Services, located in Victor Hall (building #2 on the campus map).

Bookstore.
Course textbooks may be purchased from the AASU Bookstore, which is located next to the
Memorial College Center (#6a on the campus
map). (You may want to do some comparison shopping at such online shops as TextbookSource, Amazon,
and college textbooks online.

Child Care Services.
Unfortunately, child care services are not available at AASU. A few daycare centers are located
not too far from the campus.

Course Equivalencies and Substitutions.
When your transcripts have been evaluated by Armstrong's Office of Admissions, you
will likely find that only some of your courses have been assigned AASU course
designations (for example, the art appreciation course that you completed at another
accredited university will probably be equated with AASU's ARTS 1100). Other
courses, however, may be designated only as electives ("ELEC" on your
transcript). Courses not offered by AASU (such as any business courses, for
instance) can be accepted only as electives. Fortunately, in both the AA
and BGS programs, a limited number of these transfer electives can be used to help satisfy
your degree requirements. In some cases, however, a transfer elective may be
considered as equivalent to--or as a substitute for--an AASU
course. An advisor in General Studies can help you determine whether or not it is
worth applying for such an equivalency or substitution. (If you're uncertain, be
sure to ask.) The advisor will ask you to provide a catalog description of the
course (usually available from the web site of the college or university that you
previously attended) and will help you to complete the application.

Credit
for Military Experience. Veterans may be awarded military science credit
for military experience (DA Form 214 required). Based on a minimum of one year
of continuous active duty, veterans may also receive three semester hours of credit for
physical education activities. Veterans may submit a DD Form 214 and active duty personnel
may submit a DD Form 295 in lieu of an AARTS transcript to the admissions office for
verification. Contact the Admissions Office
for additional information.

Disability Services. AASU's Office of Disability Services is
committed to working with students with disabilities to assess their needs and to assist
with academic accommodations that may be necessary and appropriate due to their
disability. You may contact the director, Ms. Amelia Bunch, at (912) 927 5269, or
visit the office on the second floor of the Memorial College Center (building #7 on the campus map).

Parking Decals. Obtain a
decal at no cost from the Office of Public
Safety, located by the Abercorn entrance to AASU (building #10 on the campus map).

The Regents' Test Requirement. The
Regents' Test is a reading and writing competency exam required of all students enrolled
in an undergraduate degree program in any University System of Georgia (USG)
institution. (Visit our Regents'
Test page for more details and sample tests.) Students who transfer 30 or more
semester hours from another institution must take the Regents' Test by their second term
of enrollment at Armstrong. During the first few weeks of any term, you may
register for the Regents' Test at the Division of Student Affairs, second floor of
Memorial College Center (building #7 on the campus map). In the meantime
(especially if you're concerned that your writing skills may be rusty), you may want to
visit Armstrong's Writing Center
(Gamble Hall, room 109) for additional advice and practice.

Savannah Relocation
Guide. If you are new to the Savannah area, several online resources
are available to help you settle in to the community: the Savannah Relocation Guide, SavannahNow, and Savannah Online.

Student IDs, Student Handbooks,
& Parking Ticket Appeals. AASU's Office of Student Activities (in the
lobby of the Memorial College Center)
provides identification cards (which also serve as library cards) and a few other student
services. Call (912) 927 5300 to find out when these services are available.

Transferring Core
Curriculum Credit Between University System of Georgia (USG) Institutions. This
FAQ page (updated March
2003) responds to some common concerns about transferring credit within the
USG.

What's Happening on Campus.
Though Armstrong is primarily a commuter campus, the Department of Art, Music, &
Theatre sponsors many activities throughout the year--most of which are available at
no cost to students. In addition, your student activities fees help support a variety of campus events and student organizations;
your athletic fees contribute to facilities and activities that you may also want to take
advantage of. Of course, the campus activities that interest most General Studies
students are those that they carry out in Armstrong's classrooms, science labs, computer labs, library, and other academic centers.
