Liberal Studies
Advisement
The primary mission of the faculty and staff in the Office
of Liberal Studies at AASU is to provide academic advisement for students enrolled in the Associate of Arts (AA), Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS), and Master of Arts in Liberal & Professional
Studies (MALPS) degree programs. Put another way, our job is to help you design
and implement an individualized plan of study that not only meets all degree requirements
but also helps you to satisfy your educational and professional goals. (See also, Success Strategies.)

What kinds of information do advisors provide?
The first responsibility of Liberal Studies advisors
is to help you decide whether or not an AA, a BLS, or a MALPS degree accords with the
goals you have set for yourself. We will encourage you to become familiar with
the various programs available at AASU, and--if you are uncertain about your
choice of major--we'll direct you to resources that should help you to explore your
options. In addition, advisors provide information on all matters related to
completion of an AA or a BGS degree:
AA and BGS degree program requirements for
undergraduates
MALPS degree program requirements
for graduate students
course prerequisites
evaluation of transfer credit
procedures for requesting
course substitutions
registration procedures on SHIP
available areas of concentration (for the BLS) or
tracks (for MALPS)
independent study options
(undergraduate only)
credit by examination
(undergraduate only)
exit exams or comprehensive projects and other
graduation requirements.
How do I
schedule an appointment with an advisor?
Simply call (912) 344 2613 or
stop by the office (Solms Hall 211) to schedule an advisement session. Although most
meetings are scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, we can
make arrangements to meet later in the evening or even, if you prefer, on a Sunday
evening. Simply give us a call to set a convenient time. To make sure
that we're available to give you the attention you need, we do ask that you schedule
an appointment--at least a day or two ahead of time. Associate of Arts and Bachelor
of Liberal Studies students enrolled at the Liberty
Center may schedule an appointment in Hinesville by calling one of the degree program
assistants listed here.
BLS majors enrolled at the Brunswick Center may
schedule an appointment locally by calling (912) 264 7227.
Will I be
notified before advance registration?
Yes, if you're enrolled in the AA or BGS degree program. In the fall and spring
semesters, about a week or so before the start of advance advisement/registration, we'll
send you a letter inviting you to set up an appointment. (You can do so either
by phone or by signing up on the sheet posted outside our offices.) To avoid
the discomfort of long lines on registration day, we strongly encourage you to take
advantage of early advisement each term. And to make sure that our letter reaches
you, please check that we have your current address on file.) Although MALPS
students are not required to meet with an advisor before registration, we will send
you an e-mail reminder when a registration period approaches.
Can I be advised on
registration day?
Yes--simply by visiting the office. On registration day, we meet with students on a
first-come, first-served basis.
Can I be advised via e-mail?
In certain circumstances--particularly if you are a MALPS student or an experienced BLS
student and live at a great distance from the campus--we can provide advisement by way of
e-mail. (Address your message to either peggy.williams@armstrong.edu
or richard.nordquist@armstrong.edu.)
However, first time visitors to Liberal Studies should always plan on scheduling an
appointment to meet with an advisor in person.
