NEWS
summer 2006
updated 20 July 2006
20 July 2006
DEADLINES. Please keep in mind
that the last day (night, in fact) that I'll be available to respond to drafts is this
Sunday, July 23, and the last day (okay, night) to submit all course work is Wednesday,
July 26. If you need to request an incomplete in the course (i.e., you will be able
to submit the majority of assignments by July 26 but not all of them), please contact me
immediately.
4 July 2006. All
pages on this course site have been updated over the past few days. Note, in
particular, the addition of several contemporary Irish authors at Authors' Sites on the RESOURCES page. Note, also,
the common course guidelines
(regarding submission deadlines and the manuscript format for drafts and final projects)
on the PROJECTS page. Though I'm counting on you to submit drafts (and any questions you
may have) by e-mail, this is the last
major update to the course site until next semester.
--Because I'll be out of town July 7, 8, and 9, I
won't be able to respond to e-mails sent over the weekend until the evening of July 10.
2 July 2006. I've continued to update the RESOURCES page. Next updates
will be on July 4.
-Dracula: While re-reading Bram Stoker's novel to keep up with Angela's
project, I recently held a little Dracula movie marathon: Bram
Stoker's Dracula (Coppola), Olivier's Dracula
(1979), and Christopher Lee's Horror
of Dracula (1958). Though Stoker's novel is not, strictly speaking,
"contemporary literature," the many retellings of the tale (in film and in
fiction) demonstrate its remarkable persistence as a myth in our own time. I've
added these films to the Irish DVD
collection in Solms 211-B: help yourselves if you're interested.
-Edna O'Brien: On June 15, University College Dublin bestowed the Ulysses Medal on
O'Brien.
--Brian Friel: The Broadway
version of Brian Friel's Faith Healer picked up a Tony Award last month.
--"Arainn Islands: Where One Day Is
Never Enough": A book that captures an
end of an era in Inishmore is Andrew McNeillie's An
Aran Keening (1968).
21 June 2006. The TITLES, PROJECTS, and RESOURCES pages have been updated.
16 June 2006. The TITLES and PROJECTS pages have been brought up
to date.
22 May 2006. Keep an eye on
the TITLES page for a list of this
summer's course readings.
8 May 2006. Over the next few weeks, this course site will be
reorganized and expanded to serve the students enrolled in this summer's study-abroad
program in Ireland. Check this NEWS page regularly for information about
additions to the course site and for guidelines on reading and writing assignments.
